DESCRIPTION: Granara is a 600 mt altitude rural village in Appenini mountains. Granara is an experiment of sustainable development of an open community. Our activities include appropriate technologies, bio-architecture, environmental education, theatre, art, social awareness, decision-making within a group, nonviolence and cooperation. Since 2001 Granara hosts a residential summer Festival, theatre workshops, plays, concerts, exhibitions, conferences and discussion groups: two or three hundred people living, working, playing together in a intense, involving atmosphere. Many of the works of the camp are in preparation for this event.
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK: Camp activities will be: - renovating the outside stage before the village Festival, including a structure to shade the area - renovation of the "Obelix": the circle of tables + bonfire + cooking outpost/bar. It's where we eat when we're many - gardening and cleaning paths and patches in the woods or around the village - completing the renovation of the external solar showers and compost-toilets - preparing tables, rooms, external facilities and camping site - planning the exterior of the Granaio guest house in view of the festival - progressing with maps and signs around the village - setting up the circus-theatre for the shows - helping in the maintenance of just-finished Bio Lake and, hopefully, take a bath inside!
- cooking and cleaning for the working group.
STUDY PART: Aside from the practical skills that you will learn, there will be study-evenings dedicated to themes related to ecology, appropriate technologies, the history of Granara and S.C.I., as well as evenings dedicated to the evaluation of the work and group building.
LIVING CONDITIONS: You will be camping in your own tent if you bring one, or in shared (boy-scout like) tents provided by us. In case of persistent rain, we can accommodate you in the Granaio, our small guest-house. If you have some special and simple recipe from your country, do bring it with you. If you have any specific food requirements (allergies, intolerance to whatever) please let us know in advance.
LANGUAGE: Italian, Spanish, French will be spoken as well by participants to the Art Festival.
Requirements: Good disposition to work in a group. Attitude to live close to nature and to learn new skills, meet new people, participate in decisions together and being authonomous. Experience and studies in architecture, carpentry, wood-work, gardening, social activities, group-decision and self-management skills are higly appreciated, yet it is not the only requirement for this camp.
WHERE: The closest cities are Parma (Emilia Romagna region) and La Spezia (Liguria region), while the closest airports are in Pisa and Milan. The train station where we would come to welcome you is Berceto.
NOTES: Five days a week we will be working in teams under the guidance of local volunteers, six hours every day. We will have one of our team coordinating the kitchen works, and we'll take turns in teams of two to actually cook and serve meals. Afternoons can be spent playing sports, walking in the woods, or down to the river Taro to swim. The evenings can be organised for dancing, stargazing, sharing songs, games, or conversation around the fire. On the free weekend, we can help you planning a trip to the protected seaside area "Cinque Terre", or you can go to visit art cities (Parma, Florence, Pisa). Though with some help from us if needed, all free time activities will be organised by the volunteers.
